Nik-L-Nip and other Wondrous & Weird Waxy Candy!

Posted on July 8, 2012 by Jason Liebig

Ah… wax candy.  As a kid, I never really understood the appeal, and frankly I was a bit afraid of the syrupy contents of some of these.  But my friends and classmates seemed to enjoy them, and as I’ve found … Continue reading →

Having established and written much of the publish Having established and written much of the published history of the iconic Mars Marathon bar, I also took to doing the same for the bar that directly inspired it: Cadbury’s CurlyWurly.

Yes, in the UK, the Curly Wurly launched a few YEARS before we’d get the superstar Marathon bar here in the USA.

But did you know that Cadbury USA would get their original creation out to US audiences a few months before the national rollout of Marathon? It’s true!

In 1973, Cadbury USA earned American bragging rights by getting to market first with our own Curly Wurly (OG USA wrapper seen here).

Now, did they somehow find out about the impending Marathon bar release and rush to get a USA version of their well-established UK bar on shelves just before Mars’ effort? The timing seems to indicate that strong possibility. But we may never know for sure.

What can be confirmed is that the USA CurlyWurly, even though it was the OG, didn’t stand a chance against the Marathon. With an instantly classic wrapper design, and served by the SnackMasters distribution arm of Mars, Marathon became one of the all-time greats. And the USA Curly Wurly couldn’t compete.

That said, unlike the Marathon bar which a decade later would, due to fading sales or possibly Mars’ own preferences be discontinued, the UK CurlyWurly remains in production and is a favorite you can still purchase and enjoy today. So the original UK Curly Wurly won the long game.

But for a brief glorious moment in time, we Americans got to have a choice between the both of ‘em. 😀
