It’s Election Day Tomorrow – So Today It’s Votes for Dogs!

Tomorrow here in the United States we celebrate one of the foundations of our democracy – Election Day.  I thought I’d mark this momentous occasion with a wonderfully-unusual candy wrapper from the UK.  It’s a chocolate bar designed for dogs called VOTES!

I can’t think of any other candy or chocolate bar wrappers that I’ve ever come across designed for canines, so this is pretty unique.   Since this came from the United Kingdom, I don’t have any personal recollections of it, but a previous collector who owned it stamped a year on the back – 1981 [though, to me it looks as if it could be a decade older].

Check it out:

UK – Market Enterprize – Votes for dogs – vitamin chocolate bar – pet food wrapper – 1981

I wasn’t quite sure what to make of this one when I first added it to my collection, but the wrapper indicates that the contents were “harmless to children” so there must have been some assumption that a kid might try this doggy treat by accident thinking it was a bar for humans.

It’s crazy to find an honest-to-goodness chocolate bar for dogs, so when you do, it’s a great oddball thing.  This wrapper has rapidly become a special piece in my collection, and one I wanted to share.  And since it’s called “VOTES” I thought today was the perfect day to share it – on the eve of Election Day!

And that’s everything for today.   See you next time!!

Interesting that it’s harmless to children, though it can kill dogs! Did the company not know that chocolate is poisonous for dogs? I guess that maybe there’s not enough in one bar to do any real damage (I think dogs have to eat a good amount to get sick), but still. This is a product that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Hartz Mountain made chocolate for dogs for years.I know they made them through the early 80s,who knows when they started making them.I have seen ads from the 1950s for them. They looked like flattened Heshey’s Kisses.I seem to recall trying one once as a kid. They were not as sweet as chocolate for humans, and seemed to have some kind of flour like extender. They did have real chocolate in them.Btween dogs dying, and kids eating them,I can see why they took them off the market.
