After posting about 7-Eleven’s name brand candy offerings yesterday, I thought it would be fun to follow-up with a showcase of the groovy Slurpee-branded gum products that were on shelves a little over a decade ago.  Returning from a successful dig through my archives, I’m excited to present 7-Eleven’s original liquid-filled Slurpee gum!

Slurpee bubblegum was unveiled in 1998 and along with Slurpee-branded ice pops (which preceded them by two months), they were the first food extensions to ever receive the Slurpee name.  [Note: 7-Eleven introduced the Slurpee to consumers in 1966.]

Launching with two flavors, blue raspberry and cherry, Slurpee gum was solely a liquid-filled gum at first.

Those first two flavors would soon be joined by at least one other, a sour-apple offering:

Over the course on the following years, the brand would get a minor packaging update and the liquid-filled lineup would be joined by “fizz powder-filled” and two-flavor “Splitz-O” offerings.  I have a trio of wrappers from this second wave of Slurpee gum:

7-Eleven - Lotte - Slurpee - Cola - powder filled gum - foil gum wrapper - 2002

I’ve noted that these wrappers do not include standardized nutrition labeling (mandatory since 1993 here in the USA) – I’m not sure how these packages skirted that – but I hope to figure it out.

7-Eleven - Lotte - Slurpee - Sour Grape - powder filled gum - foil gum wrapper - 2002

This last wrapper I have is notable as it incorporated the 7-Eleven logo.

Those are not the only variety of Slurpee gum flavors that were made during these initial two waves.  Reviewing photos of my pal Jeff Nelson’s collection, I found images of a watermelon and pineapple-orange flavor, as well as updated wrappers for blue raspberry and sour apple.  Here they are:

Sadly, 7-Eleven’s Slurpee gum wouldn’t last – though it would get one more swing of the bat with a relaunch as Slurpee-Infused liquid-filled gum in 2003-2004 – along with a fun set of mascots, too.  I’ll be covering those tomorrow!

For today, that’s everything on 7-Eleven’s original 1990’s Slurpee bubblegum!

See you next time!

The package says “For nutrition information, write Lotte, USA, Inc.”

      Mike,

I did notice the invitation to write for the nutrition information, but I don’t see why that would work, given packaging regulations. From what I understand, the on-pack standardized nutrition labeling is mandatory. I’m curious as to how a mail-away version is acceptable.

I saw the entry below on the FDA labeling guidelines. I am guessing this is bigger than the size they list for the exemption though. Perhaps they were taking liberties with the rules.

L128. What is the exemption for small food packages?
Answer: Small packages (less than 12 sq. in. total surface area available to bear labeling) may be printed with a telephone number or an address to obtain nutrition information. This exemption (using a telephone number or address in place of the Nutrition Facts label) is permitted only if there are no nutrient content claims or other nutrition information on the product label or in labeling and advertising. 21 CFR 101.9(j)(13)(i)

Such and awesome product idea! I remember chewing some of that back in the day. I sure wish I had saved some wrappers then!
