Brach’s-in-Bulk – Bite-Size and By-the-Bag – Old-School.

Growing up, one of my favorite spots at the grocery store was the Brach’s bulk candy or Pick-A-Mix area.  Decades before the modern bulk candy sections of super-stores, Brach’s kept the old-fashioned general store feeling alive with their candy sales areas.

Encouraging you to grab a bag and fill it up, the Brach’s kiosks offered a great way to get a nice variety of treats.  These diminutive delights were varied to my young palette, with some becoming lifelong favorites, while others remaining exotic strangers I would never get to know.

Cereal and Candy: Best of Breakfast Friends

Though I am a candy wrapper and candy box collector, I’m also a cereal box collector.  Each hobby has it’s own wonderful quirks and qualities, and sometimes the two of those hobbies crossover.

Marketers long-ago figured out that a kid who enjoys sugary cereal in the morning, will certainly enjoy a sugary treat later in the day, so why not entice them before they get out of their pajamas?

Finding a cereal box with a candy or gum offer has always been a double-bonus for me – and it’s why I’ve sometimes went after a cereal box, because the offer was candy-related.  Oh, the fun I have with old cardboard and paper.

Tribute to the father of Lemonheads and Atomic Fireballs: Nello Ferrara 1919-2012

On February 7th, Nello Ferrara, the man who brought us Ferrara Pan’s Lemonheads and Atomic Fireballs candies (and probably much more), passed away.   Due to this news, today’s post will be a celebration of two of his creations that were a part of so many of our childhoods.

Hot Tamales – The cinnamon center of my collector-heart.

It was my nostalgic search for a vintage Hot Tamales box (as well as a 1970’s Marathon bar wrapper, but that’s another story) that would eventually lead me to become the passionate candy collector and historian I am today.

As with the beginnings of many hobbies, I thought I would start with just one box and stop there, but it wasn’t meant to be.  The more I delved into the world of candy, the more I enjoyed it.  Though my appreciation has grown beyond these delicious cinnamon-flavored treats, they still hold a special spot in my collector-heart.

It’s called soft-chunk! Or when Bubblicious was “New!”

Before I get to the subject of today’s post, I wanted to thank everyone for giving CollectingCandy.com such a terrific response yesterday.   Thanks for the Tweets, the site mentions, the comments, and the e-mails.

I approached that first article with the goal to write the kind of history that I would want to read, but had never really seen before.  I’m gratified that people enjoyed my approach.     I think this is going to be a lot of fun.

My post today is kicked off by a piece of packaging I only acquired this week.  I’ve been looking and hunting for this one for the past few years, and finally tracking it down was pretty exciting.   It’s an example of the very first Bubblicious bubble gum wrapper – Bubblicious’ “rookie card” if you will.

Big League Chew – Retrospective of an American Original

BIg League Chew - Retrospective of an American Original

PREFACE

When I set out to launch CollectingCandy.com, my mission was clear: celebrate the history of candy packaging, its marketing, and the people behind it.  Sure, the title was Collecting Candy, but I felt that you didn’t need to be a collector to enjoy these stories, and to appreciate this history.  After all, candy is a part of most of our lives, in one form or another.
